Service Learning Colloquium
March 13, 2009 at UM, Missoula, in the UC
The UM Service Learning Colloquium was held on Friday, March 13, 2009. This day-long event included a series of workshops, a panel session, and a luncheon. It actively involved faculty and students in learning and conversation about institutional engagement, service learning, and community outreach. This excellent professional development opportunity is one that you won’t want to miss in the future. The event will be offered next spring at MSU Bozeman.
The keynote speaker for the luncheon was internationally renowned authority on service learning Dr. Andrew Furco. Dr. Furco is Associate Vice President for Public Engagement at the University of Minnesota and the former director of UC Berkeley's International Center for Research on Civic Engagement and Service Learning. His keynote address focused on institutional engagement, and he also provided an afternoon breakout session on the scholarship of engagement.
The Colloquium this year celebrated The University of Montana’s distinguished accomplishment in achieving the Community Engagement Classification by the Carnegie Foundation. The Carnegie Foundation’s elective classification system recognizes a highly select group of campuses having exemplary levels of collaboration with their communities for the mutually beneficial exchange of knowledge and resources in a context of partnership and reciprocity. This is a prestigious ranking to achieve for any campus, as it brings public recognition to community-minded institutions that take their civic missions seriously.
